Confusion Struck as Jonathan Snubs PDP

Jonathan’s absence at PDP’s south-south congress attributed to likely misunderstandings between some elders and younger politicians in the PDP – Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state vows that the PDP would unseat the APC in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state – Senator Godswill Akpabio says Nigerians are yearning for the PDP to return to power because they have discovered that the party served them faithfully

Though no reason was given by the party for Jonathan’s absence, the Punch reports that the refusal of the former president to attend the congress may be connected to misunderstandings between some elders and younger politicians in the PDP.

The congress which was hosted at the Obi Wali international civic centre in Port Harcourt had in attendance current and former governors from the south-south region. At the occasion, the new national vice-chairman of the PDP, south-south zone, Emmanuel Ogiri, expressed confidence that the PDP would win the presidency in 2019. Ogiri, said the disagreement between elders in the PDP and some members of the party would be resolved before the May 21 national convention of the party.

On his part, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state vowed that the PDP would unseat the APC in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state. He said governors and leaders of the party would ensure that the south-south zone remains the stronghold of the party. He said: “The South-South governors will make sure that PDP retains the zone.

All the governors in the zone will work as a family. We shall give all necessary support to our party members in Edo State for the party to reclaim the state in September.” Wike said the national convention of the party would be successfully held on May 21 in Port Harcourt against all odds.

“The ranting of deflated politicians on sponsored television programmes would serve no purpose. The PDP governors and leaders of the zone support the national convention, which will hold successfully on May 21 (2016),” he said. Also present at congress the Senate minority leader and former governor of Akwa Ibom state, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who said Nigerians were now yearning for the PDP to return to power because they had discovered that the party served them faithfully.

Meanwhile, Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state has been accused of causing confusion in the PDP ahead of the South-west zonal congress of the party billed for Akure, Ondo state. The accusation is coming from the national leadership of the party who spoke through its national secretary, Professor Wale Oladipo, The Punch reports. Briefing newsmen at the party secretariat today, May 14, Oladipo said Fayose was behind the plan to hold the South-west zonal congress in Akure today, May 14, despite an existing court order which asked the party to suspend the exercise.
